Living in Alfreton

Alfreton is a town in Amber Valley, about two and a half miles from the Nottinghamshire border and 9.7 miles south of Chesterfield, with 8,799 people in the parish at the 2021 census.

It was Derbyshire's main coal mining centre in the 18th century, and coaching inns grew up around the market place once the turnpike roads arrived. The pits closed in the late 1960s. Alfreton Hall, built around 1750, is now a conference centre and restaurant.

The town has an indoor market, a library, a health centre and a leisure centre with a swimming pool. David Nieper Academy was rated Good in every area, including sixth form.

Homes in Alfreton

Somercotes, a former mining village nearby, was once part of Alfreton Urban District. Today it is a separate parish, and council tax there is a little higher than in Alfreton.
