Living in Chellaston

Chellaston is a suburban village on the southern edge of Derby, about five miles from the city centre, with a population of around 15,200. It grew by about a quarter between 2001 and 2011. It was historically known for alabaster mining, and Josiah Wedgwood used its gypsum for pottery moulds. It joined Derby in 1968.

The old village centre is at the crossroads of High Street and Derby Road, with a Post Office on Derby Road, a Tesco Express, a Lidl on Swarkestone Road and a library near the community centre.

Junction 3 of the A50 serves Chellaston, with links east to the M1 and west to the A38.

Homes in Chellaston

Much of Chellaston was built between 1880 and 1950, with large estates added up to the 1990s, including one to the east on Snelsmoor Lane and one to the west along Swarkestone Road.

Chellaston Fields, the newer southern edge near Regents Place and the retail park, is in South Derbyshire rather than Derby, so council tax there is set by a different council. Check the address if you are buying on that side.
