Living in Melbourne
Melbourne is a market town about eight miles south of Derby and two miles from the River Trent, with 5,264 residents at the 2021 census. Thomas Cook, the travel pioneer, was born here in 1808.
The parish church dates from about 1120 and the town has many Georgian buildings. Framework knitting and shoemaking were its 19th century trades, and market gardening has a long history here.
There is a Sainsbury's, a post office, a pharmacy, a library and the Melbourne Assembly Rooms. There is no state secondary school in the town, so if you have children it is worth checking which secondary serves your street.
