Living in Spondon

Spondon is a suburb on the north slope of the Derwent valley, east of Derby city centre, with a population of around 12,400. The A52 divides it, with the residential village on the hilltop and the industrial area in the valley below. It was long known for heavy industry, especially British Celanese, whose large site is now closed.

The old village core around Sitwell Street, Park Road and Church Hill is a conservation area, with St Werburgh's Church and The Homestead, a Georgian house of 1740 on Sitwell Street. The main shops are on Chapel Street and Sitwell Street, with more on Dale Road and Nottingham Road, plus a library and six pubs.

Spondon has its own railway station on the Derby to Nottingham line, and the villages of Borrowash, Ockbrook and Draycott are just to the east in Erewash.
